The Earth is the middle panel of the tryptic Garden of Earthly Delights which is at the Prado Museum in Madrid. The Spanish call it “El Panel de los Madroños”. Just as the panel of hell impresses us, as a sort of a surrealistic and not too frightening place, in this middle panel Bosh expressed a very optimistic version of the essence of life on earth. According to him, the earth consists of a cheerful constant party, where people dance naked in happy couples, beautiful and exotic birds abund and there are plenty of delicacies and exotic fruit to eat. There is a proliferation of spheres (Madroños), starting by the sphere in the upper part of the panel, followed by multiple spheres that represent fruit, and other spheres that are placenta-like bubbles from which lovers incubate and emerge. The colors are also very different from the somber shades of the panel of hell. Cerulean blues, coral pinks and all shades of yellow predominate, which brings to mind the image of a beautiful rainbow.
