This is a portrait of my greatgrandmother Cristina Berg de Moller. She was born in Norway and died in Montevideo Uruguay in the plenitude of her beauty and youthful energy at age 44. She left a disconsolate husband and several children.
Her portrait was painted by the prominent Uruguayan painter MANUEL BLANES. This painting is now at the Fine Arts Museum Historic Romantic in Montevideo, Uruguay.
For me "Mama Cristina" as my grandmother called her, was a mythical figure of my childhood. When I was 4 years old, I remember that my parents took me to the Buenos Aires Museum of Fine Arts to see a retrospective exhibition on the paintings of Manuel Blanes. In the midst of the big crowds that attended the show, it was difficult for me to understand that the lady in the painting on the wall was my grandmother. Grand mothers did not live in Museums...
Later, my aunt Dinorah, now 89, my aunt Tina who died recently at 103, my aunt Olga who also died recently at 99 and my uncle Oscar who passed last year at 102, described a much more human, closer and tenderer persona, having learned about her legend first hand.
This is my homage to the legend of Cristina and the dear narrators of it. It is also my homage to the GREAT MANUEL BLANES.
