A celebrated Polish film director, Agnieszka Holland is known for historical dramas about some of humanity’s greatest crimes, such as the Holocaust. She first gained recognition for her feature film Provincial Actors, which became one of the flagship pictures of the so-called 'cinema of moral anxiety' – a notable movement in Polish cinema. The film won the International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1980.
