"Like a farmer, we tend to our roots and nurture our new shoots with hopes of abundance and continuity."
J-Town Arts presents "Deep Roots, New Shoots," new works by Leon Sun, Leland Wong, Rich Tokeshi, Sabrena Taylor, Peter Yamamoto, Holly Calica, Van Nguyen Stone, Aimee Espiritu, Nancy Hom, Hideo Yoshida, Betty Kano, Stuart Sugawara, Tai Chan Tokeshi, Christine Balza, Judith Kajiwara, Fredrick Cloyd and Stephanie Lowe
This show, located at the National Japanese American Historical Society, covers up to 40 years of work by artists rooted in the Asian American communities of the Bay Area. Throughout their careers, many of them doubled as activists, teachers, parents and providers. Part I – Deep Roots - acknowledges their past and reviews their development over the years, while Part II – New Shoots - showcases their current work and the work of a new generation of artists from the community.

Take this opportunity to share a handmade item from your ancestors from which you draw inspiration with us during this hands-on workshop. You may begin and/or complete your own creative art piece based on the work you are sharing. I will provide some drawing, painting and beading materials for your use, but please bring special art materials you may need.
A limited number of women taking part in this workshop will have the opportunity to share their small works, along with their ancestor's handmade item, in a display case (depending on number of submittals and size limitations), to be installed in the “Deep Roots, New Shoots” exhibit in NJAHS Peace Gallery.
