1993 to Present
This large and challenging print is an example of the artist's recent shift from small prints (8"x10" or 12"x20") to a much larger scale - the subject matter is larger than life. While the artist shows more detail here than in his smaller scale prints, the shapes are strikingly simplified and stylized. The treatment of saturated color and attention to strong composition shows a modern approach to a printmaking method rooted in the early 20th century in Provincetown, MA.
One large-scale woodcut , like this one, takes several days to print, with each vibrant shape hand painted and printed. Although a time consuming process, the size enables the artist to use the natural grain of the wood to enhance the composition, and reveal the quality and expressiveness of brushstrokes. The artist creates a smaller number of the larger prints focusing on very distinct and diverse color variations in each print: daytime, nighttime, and sometimes tones of gold or silver. In comparison, the artist shows gradual and subtle color and light variations in his smaller prints and can print as many as twelve.
