This painting, executed in watercolor and ink on a clayboard, is part of a series of paintings about the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The series includes paintings in acrylic, pastel, acrylic inks and watercolors.
The city Buenos Aires was first founded in 1502 and the neighborhood of San Telmo, was the original historic site. Most of the neighborhoods architecture dates from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is a fascinating place, in many of whose buildings, tunnels were found communicating with the Rio de la Plata banks. The famous escapes of the Viceroy Sobremonte and Miss Margarita and her lover were possible by the use of these secret and astonishing tunnel constructions, some of which are as long as thirteen kilometers. Nowadays, San Telmo is still a poor working class neighborhood, mixed with expensive nightclubs, restaurants and art galleries. When I was a child, I was already in love with this part of my town that appeared to belong to a different country and certainly belongs to a different epoch.
