An African Diaspora - A Trilogy

EXHIBITION: February 12th - February 29th, 2008

RECEPTION: February 15th, 6-9 PM

Rae Louise Hayward was a modest, humble, and soft-spoken woman. However, reaction to her death by Bay Area artists has been like the passing of a great queen.

"She was the hub of the matrix of African American artists. She was gentle, gracious, and kind. She was the most sincere person that I ever met. I enjoyed our conversation, her humor and her humanity",
says Oakland artist Orlonda Uffre.

"She was a real dynamic force in the community. She will be missed. Her legacy will always live on". reflects Dianne Love curator of the Craft & Cultural Arts Gallery.

An African Diaspora - A Trilogy

Market Street Gallery proudly announces the opening of "An African Diaspora - A Trilogy" featuring three Bay Area African American artists: Rae Louise Hayward, James Gayles and TheArthur Wright. Their works represent a wide range of African-based themes. The show begins February 12 through February 29, 2008. A reception will be held on February 15, 6-9PM.

Rae Louise Hayward, a beloved member of the East Bay arts community died on January 3, 2008. Ms. Hayward co-founded "The Art of Living Black," an event and venue held annually during Black History Month for African American artists at the Richmond Arts Center.

"This exhibit, though planned before her passing, is also in memoriam to a great friend and artist, Rae Louise Hayward. Her work is beautiful...but she created a more wondrous thing in 'The Art of Living Black', an event that has grown and brought in a growing number of artists of African descent who will live, along with their progeny, here in America, forever. She is sorely missed..." said TheArthur Wright.

This exhibit showcases thoughtful, bold, colorful, expressive works of three artists whose very different techniques are inextricably linked to their heritage and shaped by their individual experiences in the African Diaspora.

This show is sponsored and organized by MesArt.com and on-line art hosting business. MesArt.com provides a virtual venue for artists to exhibit and offer their work for sale. MesArt.com also works with many community organizations to promote artists.

TheArthur Wright:

"This is in memoriam to a great friend and artist, Rae Louise Hayward, who was to be a third member of this show, "African Diaspora - A Trilogy". She passed away on Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 and we put her to rest January 11th. She will be missed as friends and loved ones will be and also as someone who has accomplished much and in a relatively short period of time.

Rae Louise Hayward, somewhat diminutive, was large in spirit and would have been a great artist had her life continued. Perhaps she will still be judged so by the world of people who loves art for the precious place it holds universally and what it means to the human race. Her work is beautiful and African-based, as is the work of myself and James. But she created a more wondrous thing in The Art of Living Black, a venue that has brought in a growing number of artists of African descent who will live, along with their progeny, here in America, forever.

We loved you, and love you, Rae Louise, while you were here, and your spirit will grow larger with the passing of time along with the volume of that love. The whispers of you, the rumors of you, were caressed with kind words, loving words, those of friends and those who knew you from afar. We will meet you again, somewhere along the continuum of this thing we call time, who knows where, but I am sure the universe will say it knows of no such thing. Why bind a boundless thing? You go, girl, you have been rendered timeless and will live forever. "
