McEvoy Foundation for the Arts presents:

Thursday, November 21, 7:00pm-9:30pm, San Francisco

McEvoy Foundation for the Arts presents an evening of performance curated by Kim Addonizio. The evening expands on themes of portraiture as seen in the survey exhibition 'Michael Jang's California.' Through poetry, prose, live music, film, and audience participation, writer Kim Addonizio invites performers to explore the concept of portraiture-of the self, artists, and art forms-as it relates to the places we find ourselves. The evening is infused throughout with the spirit of the Blues-that American musical genre which has influenced so many notions of the self in artistic practice. Performers include Addonizio, poets Susan Browne and Brittany Perham, and blues musicians Steven Freund, Beth Kohnen, Steve Ehrmann, and Paul Revelli. With its spirited lineup of contributions, People/Places/Performance animates this immersive exhibition for all.

Michael Jang's work since the 1970s has included arresting candid and posed portraits of subjects from all strata of society, from his Chinese-American relatives to aspiring local weathermen of the 1980s. This landmark retrospective, curated by Sandra S. Phillips, assembles dozens of vintage and contemporary prints that demonstrate Jang's remarkable ability to capture both the idiosyncratic and quintessential in a wide range of subjects. Photographs from the McEvoy Family Collection by Jang's major influences-Diane Arbus, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand-situate his work within a tradition of photographers fascinated by people in the streets.

Kim Addonizio is a poet, novelist, and essayist. She's published seven poetry collections, two novels, two story collections, and two books on writing poetry. Her collection of poems Tell Me (New York: BOA Editions Ltd., 2000) was a finalist for the National Book Award. She is the recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation and has been awarded two Pushcart Prizes. She lives and works in Oakland, California.
