Artist Talk: Alison O'Daniel in Conversation with Tanya Zimbardo

Sunday, July 21, 3:00pm-4:00pm, San Francisco

MORE INFO: https://www.mcevoyarts.org/event/artist-talk-alison-odaniel/

McEvoy Foundation for the Arts (MFA) presents an Artist Talk with filmmaker Alison O'Daniel. Curator Tanya Zimbardo joins O'Daniel to discuss her unfolding project "The Tuba Thieves," including the process of reimagining through film the punk show for the closing party of the Deaf Club in San Francisco in 1979.

"The Tuba Thieves" (2013-) is both a feature-length film in progress and an expanding project of mixed-media installations, sculptures, and performances through which O'Daniel invites audiences and collaborators "to navigate, de-construct and re-imagine sound." The Los Angeles-based artist, who is hard of hearing, collaborates with hearing, Deaf and Hard of Hearing composers, musicians, performers, and athletes in her work across mediums.

This program is offered with ASL-interpretation. 'Alison O'Daniel: The Tuba Thieves' is on view through September 7, 2019 in conjunction with the exhibition 'What is an edition, anyway?' The program repeats approximately every half hour.

Alison O'Daniel (b. 1979) is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Los Angeles working across sound, narrative, sculpture, installation and performance. Her projects, screenings, and performances have been included in Made in L.A. 2018, Hammer Museum; The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow; Anthology Film Archives, New York, and Art Los Angeles Contemporary. Solo exhibitions include Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles; Art In General, New York; Samuel Freeman Gallery, Los Angeles; Centre d'Art Contemporain Passerelle, Brest, France, among others. She is a recent recipient of a 2019 Creative Capital Award. O'Daniel received her BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art and MFA from University of California, Irvine. She will join the faculty of the California College of the Arts this fall.
