View South-Sacramento River From Jeddediah Smith’s Overlook

I enjoy painting unique landscapes in open air.  Focusing on strong design, my goal is for a bright, clean, fresh watercolor interpretation.  My most prized works often interpret places of natural beauty: wilderness/or national parks. I also render still life and portraiture.

Artist hiked in early spring across BLM owned wild land to a rock promontory across from Bald Hill in Tehama County to the view explorer Jeddediah Smith may have had in his search for passage north along the river then called Buena Ventura (“good view”). In his journal, Smith at this high point made a decision to turn back and cross the River near Red Bluff under the mistaken belief the River flowed out of Mt. Lassen. The artist was impressed after a long cold winter with the long view to the South of Snow Mountain and warm, glowing spring green sprouting all along the River. This BLM land is the largest wild stretch of the Sacramento River anywhere along its length, preserved forever from commercial development for the people to enjoy. Evidence of ancient hunters and abundant wildlife here. This work was chosen by Nevada Museum of Art's Curator as s finalist in to 2005 North State Fine Art Competition, Shasta County Arts Council.
