This bird is known locally as a "stealer", referring to its habit of stealing the prey of other birds. The biggest challenge in making this image was simultaneously getting the eye in focus and the complete bird in the frame. I had managed to get close enough to the jaeger to fill the frame with his image, but in order to focus on the eye it has to be in the center third of the frame. The solution to this is to pan the camera so that you can focus on the eye, hold that focus and pan back until you've framed the bird. That works if you're quick (I'm not) or if the bird keeps its head still (it didn't). Fortunately, I'm patient. You'll have to email me to get the number of shots it took...
