  Description

The artist is working to create an image of enduring love. His muse, with a saddened visage, embraces him and gently guides his hand. The sketch he's working from, showing lovers embracing in a pastoral setting, is attached to the large canvas at the top. But they have evolved in his painting into a hermaphroditic corpse in a sarcophagus instead. The painting on the easel is parallelled by the icon of Christ in the tomb (with the cross behind) to the left, an image of man's potential to "bury" the weaknessess of the flesh and resurrect a spiritual being. But the artist, feeling loss, stands before his work, his pointed brush dripping red having pierced the side of the image before him, perhaps an attempt to kill this apparition of passion's death. At the foot of the easel, though, lay the artist's tools as the weapons of the conquered were once laid at the feet of their conquerer.
