  Description

Sheeler is recognized as one of the founders of American modernism and one of the master photographers of the 20th century.

He was influenced strongly by Cubism and Futurism, and considereed himself a Precisionist.
Precisionism's main themes included industrialization and the modernization of the American landscape, which was typically depicted in precise, sharply defined, geometrical compositions. There is a degree of reverence for the industrial age in the movement, but social commentary was not fundamental to the style. The degree of geometric abstraction in the movement ranged considerably.

As in his photographic works, his paintings generally featured industrial machinery and architecture.
In the 1930's, He was hired by the Ford Motor Co. to photograph and make paintings of their Rouge River factory, which is also featured as the background of this portrait.

Acrylic on canvas.

Collection of the artist.
