Being young and idealistic, he ' didn't think in terms of being killed,' saying 'at that age you feel immortal.'
He surreptitiously crossed the closed border from France into Spain, and along with a group of similarly idealistic Britons and Australians, made his way by night into the Republican territory of Catalonia, via paths in the Pyrenees Mountains...."
