In China girls were crippled by their parents for a thousand years (937-1949). Not just royalty but also poor girls. Bound feet were a mark of beauty and the gait produced by walking was considered erotic; all important to securing a husband.  Somewhere today there may be the last Lily Foot girl grown old.
