This is a time lapse photograph of the star field surrounding the north star, Polaris, on a moonless night in the high Sierra. Polaris is the brightest object in the center of the field, just at the top of the shadow line. The circular motion of the star field is being created by the rotation of the earth. The shadow line is created by a group of trees that seem quite animate.
The illumination of the night sky as it approaches the tree line below is a mystery, but it adds dimensionality to the motion. Please see Illuminated View #2 for another version of this piece, taken on the same evening.
