In all the years I've been making photographs at the San Diego River estuary I have never seen this species here before. What a treat it was to have such a close encounter - and what a small bird! Viewed through the viewfinder without anything to add scale, this bird looks like it could be comparable in size to a Great Blue Heron. But when it walked right by me (and over my rubber boot, as this one did) I was impressed by how small it was. Birds of North America shows it as being about 50% bigger than a Green Heron, but this individual was no bigger than the biggest Green Heron I've seen.
