I made this image while positioned on the cliffs above La Jolla Cove. I was trying to capture some good flight shots of the Brown Pelicans as they circled the cove and landed on the cliffs to my left, when one pelican aborted an attempt to land on a ledge below me and suddenly appeared - nicely framed and (almost) in focus - about 30' in front of me. It was hard to tell who was the most startled but I managed to get off one exposure before I ducked out of the way. I'm happy to report that Brown Pelicans are very agile in flight and the pelican, me, and my equipment escaped harm.
