Red-tailed Hawk
(Buteo jamaicensis)
The Red-tailed Hawk is the most widely distributed and commonly observed bird of prey in North America. It's not unusual to see them from your car, perched on power lines or fence posts every few hundred yards.
I photographed this individual at the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. The pre-dawn air had been heavy with dew and the hawk was spreading its wings to accept the warming rays of the first light of dawn.
