Osprey (Pandion haliaetus)
The Osprey is a long-lived and broadly distributed raptor that feeds exclusively on live fish. It builds large nests on the tops of telephone poles, tufa (at Mono Lake) or masts of idle boats - as was the case with this bird.
I was photographing shorebirds on the mudflats at the mouth of the San Diego River when this Osprey swooped down to grab some seaweed to use as nesting material. I had time to make only one exposure and was fortunate that the head and eye were in focus. I watched the Osprey fly off to a marina to the north and add the clump of seaweed to a nest it was building in the mast of boat moored there.
