White space that is not white is one of the goals of this painting. Cubes challenges the viewer not only to see the black as white space, but also to see the second cube. Both fun and a mental challenge. The painted image is only one of a series of designs. The three cubes embedded was the first design with simplification pushing it to two areas of color. Using a negative image was the final step in this design. White on dark made the illusion jump.
