"You Can't Make Me" is the second painting in a two painting series. Whereas "Make Me" dealt with adolescent defiance to reach their independence, this deals with how age breeds safety yet possible ignorance. The old man portrayed could be anyone but nonetheless seems like he has seen many a day. He is surrounded by a doorway turned sideways, but more importantly a lock. Even though when you grow older and become your own individual you become set in your ways and become less open to new places, ideas, and experiences. I propose to the viewer that even though the old man might find safety within his locked door, that he himself locked, he might be locking himself out from new experiences and his own personal growth as a person.
