San Francisco artist Mike Kimball introduces a new body of work for 2011 featuring high-octane, low-relief sculptural works with a motor sports theme running throughout.
Kimball deconstructs and then reconstructs graphically the shapes, textures and atmosphere of speed found at professional auto racing events. He takes the high gloss of automotive finishes, the grit of asphalt pavement, and the rain on a windshield and mashes them all together - resulting in this series of graphically abstract representations of cars racing at high speed on wet tracks.
A close examination of each reveals hidden jewel-like details of automotive fasteners and hardware adorning the nearly bas-relief surfaces, quietly adding another dimensional layer to the work. Each composition is housed in a sleek black box frame of anodized aluminum for that showroom new look of a specially crafted racing vehicle.
